Obituary: Carl Helgerson

EAST GREENWICH, RI (October 7, 2016) – Retired Covenant pastor Carl Helgerson, 94, died Friday, September 30.

1007-helgerson-photoCarl was born March 22, 1922, in Providence, Rhode Island, to C. Arthur and Edla Helgerson. He graduated from North Park College in 1944 and North Park Seminary in 1949. He earned a bachelor’s degree in American civilization from Brown University in 1956.

He married Elsbeth Carlson on September 7, 1944.

Carl served Covenant churches in Manchester, Connecticut, and Pawtucket, Rhode Island. He subsequently taught at junior- and senior-high schools, and then served as director of two retirement communities in Providence and East Providence, Rhode Island.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Cynthia Bloomquist; and a son, Kurt Helgerson. A son, Mark Helgerson, preceded him in death in 1980.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 8, at Christ Church in East Greenwich, Rhode Island.

  • A more faithful servant than Carl would be difficult to find. He and Elsbeth demonstrated a strong and loving relationship in their 70 years of marriage. Their consistent walk and gentle talk has been an example to all who knew them. Comfort and peace to his family.
