Obituary: Barbara Strom

TURLOCK, CA (April 9, 2015) — Barbara (Lundell) Strom, the widow of Covenant pastor C. Milton Strom, died March 30. She was 95.

Barbara was born in May 1919. In 1941, she earned a degree in elementary education from San Jose State Teachers College, where she minored in music. Her first teaching position was in a one-room schoolhouse in Atwater, California, and she taught in Hilmar for 40 years.

Barbara attended Hilmar schools and upon graduation in 1936, she entered San Jose State Teachers College. There she graduated in 1941 with a major in elementary education and a minor in music. Her first teaching position was in a one room schoolhouse in Atwater. A few years later, she moved to teach in Hilmar, California.

On June 20, 1946, Barbara married Rev. C. Milton Strom, who wrote for the California Conference publication “California.” He died in 1963.

Both were heavily involved in the Hilmar Covenant Church, where she was the church pianist and served as the organist from 1952-2000. Barbara was a charter member of the Emanuel Hospital Women’s Auxiliary.

Memorials may be given to the Benevolence Fund of Covenant Village of Turlock, Covenant Care Hospice of Turlock or to the Barbara Strom Scholarship Fund in care of Hilmar Covenant Church. This scholarship fund is for youth majoring in music or education and attending North Park University in Chicago.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at Allen Mortuary in Turlock. Burial will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at North Hilmar Cemetery. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at Hilmar Covenant Church.
