What Advice Would You Give Your Younger Self?

CHICAGO, IL (November 11, 2014) — “If only I knew then what I know now.” Who hasn’t groaned that at some point?

Perhaps you now know that you should have not worried so much, or that you should have been prepared to switch careers several times or kept those baseball cards that would have made you wealthy.

In January the Companion will feature 40 Covenanters under 40—highlighting young leaders throughout the ECC who enrich the church and the world around us. We’re excited about this chance to celebrate the gifts and contributions of younger members of the Covenant.

At the same time, they and others might benefit from some words of wisdom, so we’d like to hear from our older, ahem, other readers in response to this question: What is one piece of advice that you would give your younger self? (We’ll compile a selection of your responses to publish in the January/February issue.)

So let us know in 100 words or less by writing in the comment section below or by emailing Cathy Norman Peterson.

  • Be sure to develop the discipline of reading scripture and prayer in your life on a daily basis.
I thank God for leading me to Bible Study Fellowship where I began to learn this discipline.I can’t thank the Lord enough for how he lead me along even when I wasn’t doing this spiritual discipline. Also get involved in a small group for Bible study and prayer and become the body of Christ to each other.

  • My advice to myself would be to discipline myself to have a set aside daily time for prayer and devotion to scripture. Even so, thankfully the Lord has kept me from making many regrets and has given me the peace to set aside the ones that I have. In retrospect, I can see where God has carried me when I didn’t know, and I am so grateful and in awe of what he has done for me when I was the least deserving. God is good, all the time.

  • Spend more time in prayer and Scripture, spend more time enjoying family and friends, spend less time trying to change what you can’t.

  • Be sure to allow yourself to make lots of mistakes! That’s the way we learn, even though we think we are failing. For the Lord uses everything in our life to grow us closer to him, and in His powerful love he never condemns us. He would rather see us trying, risking, going farther and deeper than to sit on our hands and fearfully wonder if we are choosing rightly. He can make everything work to good; if we trust Him we need not be afraid. Then we are truly free!
