Presentations, Workshops at Mental Health Symposium to Be Streamed

CHICAGO, IL (November 4, 2014) — The keynote and plenary session of “Being Present: A Faithful Response to Mental Illness” will be streamed during the mental health symposium to be held Saturday on the campus of North Park University.

Also being streamed live will be two workshops by Covenant clergy.

Viewers can access the streams at northpark.edu/live. The workshops also will be archived at CovChurch.tv.

“We are able to stream the sessions thanks to the generous support of the Good Shepherd Initiative of the Covenant Chaplains Association and Covenant Ministries of Benevolence,” said Mary Chase-Ziolek, North Park University professor of health ministries and nursing.

The keynote and plenary speaker will be John Swinton, professor of practical theology and pastoral care at the School of Divinity, Religious Studies, and Philosophy at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. He is widely regarded as a leading expert on ministering to people with mental illness and their families.

The workshops will be presented by two therapists who also are Covenant clergy. Pablo Anabalon will speak on “Culture and Mental Health.” David Hawkinson will discuss “Adding Our Voices: Spiritual Care and Reflection in Mental Health and Healing.”

8:50–10:20 a.m. — Keynote address: “A Faithful Understanding of Mental Illness,” by John Swinton

10:45–12:15 p.m. — “Culture and Mental Health,” by Pablo Anabalon

1:30–3 p.m. — “Adding Our Voices: Spiritual Care and Reflection in Mental Health and Healing,” by David Hawkinson

3:15–4:15 p.m. — Plenary address: “A Faithful Understanding of Mental Illness,” by John Swinton
