Obituary: Joyce Lundell

MINNEAPOLIS, MN (April 2, 2014) — Former Covenant missionary Joyce (Anderson) Lundell, 89, widow of former Covenant minister Ken Lundell, died Monday. Services are pending.

She was born April 8, 1924. She married Ken on October 28, 1943. He died in 2012.

The Lundells lived in Japan during his military service immediately after World War II.

They began their missionary service in Japan in 1958 and served until 1961. He served as interim pastor at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Kennedy, Minnesota, from 1963 to 1965. He then took a job as administrative assistant for the Department of World Mission in 1965 and became its assistant secretary (a role similar to that of director today) in 1972 and worked primarily with short-term missionaries.

Joyce was a homemaker until her children grew up, and then she worked at various jobs, including many years at Swedish Covenant Hospital.

She is survived by daughters Rosemary Lundell and Juliann Tarsney, and sons Jonathan and Don Lundell.

  • I am so sad to hear of Joyce’s passing. She was a beautiful spirit who spread so much love in our world. God was so pleased with her!
When I worked at Swedish Covenant Hospital she was such a dear friend and so kind to include me in family Thanksgivings several times. Special memories for sure!

  • We remember Joyce and Ken from our early days as missionaries when we lived next door to them. Their door was always open. Joyce’s smile and friendly advice was always present. We miss them both.
