Dorothy Train, Covenant Pastor’s Spouse, Dies

Dorothy J. Train, Covenant pastor Edmund Train’s wife and former teacher at North Park Academy, died Thursday, July 11. She was ninety-three.

Born December 30, 1919, to Alfred and Mabel Nyquist, in Wausa, Nebraska, she grew up attending the Covenant church there. After graduating from Wayne State College in Nebraska, she taught English and speech for five years at North Park Academy, a high school on the campus of North Park University in Chicago. There, in the fall of 1946, she met Edmund Train, who was a student at the seminary. They were married July 2, 1948.

Together they served Covenant churches in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Cambridge (relocated to Lexington), Massachusetts; and Greeley, Colorado. When Ed became a church planter for the Central Conference, Dorothy helped as he started churches in Naperville, Libertyville, and Crystal Lake, Illinois. In retirement, they lived at Covenant Village of Northbrook, Illinois.

She is survived by her husband of sixty-five years, Ed; their two daughters, Louise Gustafson (Mark) of Lake Zurich, Illinois, and Linda Drimalla (Rick) of Charlotte, North Carolina; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a brother, Merwyn Nyquist (Lois) of Lincoln, Nebraska.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 17, at Winnetka Covenant Church in Wilmette, Illinois, where the Trains were members. Memorial gifts may be given to the Benevolent Fund of Covenant Village of Northbrook, Illinois.

  • Dear Ed,
Dorothy was an inspiration to me and to so many because she was such a kind person. What a gift you both were to the Libertyville ECC. I loved that you two attended most of North Park Theological Seminary Lectures until just recently. God bless you and your family. Guylla

  • Dear Ed,

How many wonderful memories I have of our times together in the Boston area when you and Roger were both serving churches. Roger died in February of 2012 so now he and Dorothy can share memories along with dear friend and colleague Jim Hawkinson and many other precious friends. How blessed we all were!

    Love, Charlotte

  • Praise God for the gift of life and the extension to eternity. It’s encouraging to see that Dorothy’s life was occupied by acts of spreading good news. May we learn with this good example. To the family may God be with you in this period of time.
    Pastor Simon, ECCK-President
