Funeral Service Tuesday for Evangeline Dennis

ALBERTA, CA (August 22, 2011) – A funeral service for retired Evangelical Covenant Church missionary Evangeline “Vangie” (Ericson) Dennis will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Malmo Mission Covenant Church.

Dennis, 87, died Friday.

She was born on March 17, 1924, in Whitemouth, Manitoba. She completed her regular school in 1942 and began teaching at the age of 18. She married Vern Dennis on September 23, 1944.

The couple was commissioned to mission work in 1954 and served in Congo. The couple were the first missionaries to travel by air rather than sail to Congo. They concluded their missionary service in 1963.

Whether in Congo or in the United States, Dennis was known for incredible hospitality, demonstrating a willingness to take in strangers.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 2003, and a son, Neil, who died in 1971 at the age of 14. She is survived by one son, Bruce, of Salies-de-Béarn, France, and three daughters: Della, Glenda and Diane (Christopher), all of Edmonton.

Interment will follow at the Malmo Covenant Church Cemetery.

  • We have valued memories of years together in the North Park community in Chicago with Vern and Vangie and good times in their home, which was always open to others, as were their hearts. We are blessed to have been part of their lives for a while

  • Vangie certainly was known for her gracious hospitality… for me, and many others, it was her “B & B” service. I agree ‘we need more Vangies’. Our sympathy is extended to her family.

  • I thank God for Vangie and the grace that she gave so freely to me and to so many others. At North Park Seminary we say we offer”an education for your head, heart, and your hands” Vangie personified this, her hands (and smile) expressed her big heart. She will be missed.

  • We have lost a “hostess with the mostest”.  Vangie was well known for her hospitality, whether it be a meal at the last minute or a bed for a month. She was also a friend and listener who was never to busy to sit and talk if you needed an ear.  She will be missed by many here in the North Park neighborhood and I am sure by many in the Malmo neighborhood. I will always remember her serving her guests on the blue Swedish plates that most of us Swedish heritage people hang on the wall; but she said they did no good on the wall and were wonderful for serving food to friends. Her large stock were used regularly and with love.

  • What a wonderful couple Vern and Vangie were. Their dedicated work with international students in Chicago was incredible. The were so wonderfully hospitable–always with a smile to greet one and all. They will be missed. May the Lord multiply their kind.
