NORTHBROOK, IL (March 7, 2011) – A historic conjoining of two Korean Evangelical Covenant churches was celebrated during a special service and dinner on Sunday.
The union brings together the Korean Central Covenant Church, which has ministered in Korean to first-generation immigrants, and Lakeview Covenant Church, an English-speaking congregation made up of primarily second-generation Koreans. The new body will continue to use the Lakeview name.
“This is a very significant event in that it’s the first time in Korean-American history that a first generation Korean church and second generation church have come together, especially with the second generation providing leadership to the church,” says a spokesperson.
Korean Central began in 1966. Lakeview began in 2004 and was welcomed into the denomination at the last Annual Meeting. Separate services in Korean and English will continue to be offered in the same building.
Sunday’s special service was conducted in English and Korean with Donn Engrebretson, executive vice president of the Evangelical Covenant Church, leading the dedication service.
