Memorial Service Set for North Park Seminary’s Richard Carlson

CHICAGO, IL (July 29, 2013) – A memorial service for Richard Carlson, professor emeritus of ministry at North Park Theological Seminary and a former Covenant pastor, will be conducted on Sunday, August 11, at 2:30 p.m. in Anderson Chapel on the North Park University campus.

Carlson, 73, was born May 4, 1940, in Wichita, Kansas. He died Saturday.

Carlson married Jolene Bergstrom on November 7, 1971. Bergstrom Carlson, who survives her husband, is also a Covenant minister and former Central Conference associate superintendent and director of church planting.

He earned his bachelor’s degree at North Park College; M.Div. from Union Theological Seminary in New York; and his DMin from McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago.

Carlson served Immanuel Covenant Church in Bronx, New York; Trinity Covenant Church in Livingston, New Jersey; and Douglas Park Covenant Church in Chicago.

He began teaching at the seminary in 1978 and taught spiritual formation and ministry until 2012.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Rachel Carlson and Emily Carlson Tucker; and a son, Andrew. He also was a grandfather of five, with another on the way.
