Five for Friday: Black Preaching, Monarchs, Def Leppard

CHICAGO, IL (May 13, 2016) — Covenanters routinely share links to social media articles and videos that Covenant News Service believes may be of interest to others. Each Friday we post five of them. Following is a sample of those submissions—their inclusion does not represent an endorsement by the Covenant of any views expressed.

Black Preaching Changed the Course of This Country

How could one not be stirred by the preaching of some of the African American preachers mentioned in the story. It did lift the vision of people to new possibilities.

From the article: “African American preaching style, after all, was the mighty tool Martin Luther King Jr. and his fellow leaders of the civil rights movement used to reshape America into a more just nation.”

Survey: Few Pastors Say Adulterous Ministers Should Face Permanent Ban from Pulpit

The story also reports that the age of respondents to a survey has a strong correlation with whether pastors should step aside during investigation into allegations. Older pastors are more hesitant to have ministers step aside during an investigation, but they also are more likely to say those who commit adultery should be banned permanently from serving in the role if the allegations prove true.

From the story: “The Scripture says pastors must be above reproach, said (Ed) Stetzer. “So it’s not surprising that some want to see fallen pastors banned from ministry. Still, pastors are also people who talk about forgiveness regularly and, by and large, they want to see those who fall have a chance at restoration.”

Tribes Help Grow Monarch Population

Wouldn’t it be great if everyone with a yard would do something similar? It would be a shame for people not to experience the beauty of these insects.

From the article: “Monarch butterfly numbers have plummeted over the years from the expansion of farmland, sprawling housing developments and the clear-cutting of natural landscapes along their migration path, experts say.”

Town to Build $63 Million High School Football Stadium

You don’t even have to have the state name in the headline to know the town is in Texas, where everything is bigger and where football is king. Nice to see the community—and others mentioned in the story—have their priorities straight.

From the article: “We’re visionaries,” McKinney Independent School District Superintendent Rick McDaniel told the Dallas Morning News after local voters passed a $220 million bond issue to fund the stadium and other district improvements. “And we believe we have a vision for McKinney ISD that will propel us forward for a long time.”

Def Leppard Meets Deaf Leopards

You don’t have to be a fan of the heavy metal band to appreciate that they would take time to have their photo taken with students who attend the Arkansas School for the Deaf. The team’s mascot is the Leopards.

From the article: “Little Rock’s KFSM reports that the meeting was the result of an online petition that originally sought to secure a school visit from the band prior to their concert at the city’s Verizon Arena.”
