HOPKINTON, MA, (February 9, 2016) — Once again, Community Covenant Church is offering runners from around the country the rare opportunity to participate in the April 18 Boston Marathon.
Although some 25,000 people run in the marathon, entering the event is difficult because of the large number of individuals eager to secure a place. In addition to the $350 entrance fee, the applicant also must have run a qualifying time at a previously certified marathon.
Each year, Community Covenant Church, which is located in Hopkinton where the race begins, receives two racing numbers and gives them to runners who promise to raise funds through sponsorships. Funds are used for camp scholarships as well as children and youth ministries of the church.
One number already has been assigned, but another is available to the general public. Recipients of the numbers do not need to pay the entry fee nor do they need to meet the time requirement.
The average amount raised by runners is $3,000, said pastor Bruce Johnson.
Anyone interested in receiving a number should contact Johnson by email at or by telephone at 508-397-5814.
