Take a Fresh Look at the Companion

CHICAGO, IL (January 9, 2015) — Readers of the Covenant Companion will see a new look when they receive their January/February issue.

The magazine has received a dramatic design makeover and several new features that give additional opportunities to read about the work Covenanters are doing and hear more voices from across the denomination. Some of the magazine’s new feel is due to new and improved paper quality, including a thicker cover.

The editorial and design team began meeting about 16 months ago to discuss the future of the publication amid a rapidly changing communication landscape and a growing denomination that continues to become more diverse.

“We debated whether it was even necessary for a denomination to publish a print magazine anymore in this chaotic era of digital disruption,” Edward Gilbreath writes in his editor’s note in the new issue. “Our conclusion: Yes—perhaps now more than ever before.”

He continues, “Though the media world is in flux, we determined that a spirited magazine that could serve as a unifying agent during these times of rapid change would be a valuable contribution to the life of the church. There was still a role for us, but we also needed to evolve to meet publishing’s new challenges.”

So the Companion staff went into hyper-reinvention mode to reimagine and ultimately relaunch the magazine. A new website is also on its way. “Our goal in it all has been to produce a compelling magazine whose quality speaks for itself,” Gilbreath writes.

One reader already has emailed the staff to say, “It’s gorgeous, and the words on the front are so true: bold, innovative, faithful, and just getting started.”
