Carson’s rise from mediocre student to one of the world’s premiere surgeons has been chronicled multiple times, including the television film, “Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story,” which starred Academy Award winner Cuba Gooding, Jr.

Carson was raised in Detroit and struggled throughout elementary school, until his mother forced him to change bad habits and work more diligently. He went on to graduate with honors from Southwestern High School and then graduated from Yale University and the University of Michigan Medical School.

At age 33, he became director of pediatric neurosurgery at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, the youngest person to ever head a major division at the hospital. Carson made medical history in 1987 by when he became the first surgeon to successfully separate conjoined twins who had been joined at the back of the head. Carson’s 70-member surgical team worked for 22 hours during the surgery.

President George W. Bush presented him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award in the United States, in 2008.

The main CCC clinic will be one of the sites visited during Covenant Mission Detroit in the two days prior to this year’s Annual Meeting.

He specifically embodies the integrity that is so terribly missing in our political system and is not afraid to call a “spade a spade” . Let us embrace this tremendous individual in our City and get behind him and your youth. Thank you for sponsoring.
