Obituary: Gladys White

MERCER ISLAND, WA (May 14, 2014) — Gladys (Dickson) White, widow of Al White, died Wednesday. Services will be Saturday, but a time is pending.

Gladys, 91, was born September 27, 1922, in McPherson, Kansas. She earned a bachelor’s of science in music education from Greenville College.

She married Al on June 18, 1944. He died March 9, 2014.

In 1956, the couple was called by the Covenant Annual Meeting as missionaries to teach in Alaska. They moved to Unalakleet where they worked at Covenant High School for 29 years. It was a boarding school that served students from throughout the region.

The school closed in 1985 because other schools had opened in the area, which led to declining enrollment. The Whites retired the following year and returned to Eagle Rock, California, where they had lived prior to entering the mission field.

Gladys is survived by three children, Melvin (Gaye) White of Sequim, Washington, Ernest (Karen) White of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Florence (Keith) Gustafson of Linwood, Washington; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
