Five for Friday: Urban Plantations, Evangelism, and Do Jerks Threaten the Gospel

By Stan Friedman

CHICAGO, IL (March 28, 2014) — Many Covenanters routinely share links to social media articles and videos with one another that Covenant News Service believes may be of interest to others. Each Friday we post five of them. Following is a sample of those submissions—their inclusion does not represent an endorsement of any views expressed.

To See or Not to See the Movie ‘Noah’

A minister is concerned that the movie might get the story right. “I think our real problem is not that the story of Noah might be tainted, I think it is that we might have to come face to face with the God of Genesis. The Bible starts off with a story about a God who doesn’t fit neatly into our VBS or our sermons or blogs or books or churches, and often the people who help us see that the best are the artists.”

He adds, “In the Bible, Noah doesn’t have any dialogue. Try making a movie where Russell Crowe doesn’t say a word (that would be a miracle).” If only the makers of ‘Les Miserables’ had kept him from singing a word. (That would have been merciful).

The Gospel Is Never at Stake: Orthodoxy, Unity, Not Being a Jerk

Our behavior doesn’t put the gospel at stake but our actions sure affect people’s ability to experience it.

Urban Church Plantations

This is a provocative article in the best sense of the word. Some may be troubled by the loaded term “plantation,” but that’s the writer’s point. I greatly appreciate that the Covenant’s philosophy is to work alongside the people already at work in these communities.

Bad Reasons Not to Evangelize

If we’re honest with ourselves, many of us would say this article is right on regarding the excuses.

Jimmy Carter Slams Sexist Biblical Interpretations

The former president calls on all religions to stop using Scripture to oppress women. Speaking out of his own Christian context, he says, “There’s no evidence at all that Jesus Christ did anything except to exalt women. Never has a single word or action been alleged to him that would deprive women from their equal or superior rights.”
