CHICAGO, IL (November 11, 2013) – World Relief International is using funds from Covenant World Relief (CWR) to provide assistance in the Philippines after Typhoon Haiyan sliced through the central part of the nation and killed an estimated 10,000 people over the weekend

The storm, considered among the worst ever recorded, also left several hundred thousand people without food, water, and medical care, according to government and non-governmental leaders.

“World Relief is currently collaborating with partners on the ground in Southeast Asia who will provide critical, life-saving food and non-food assistance,” the organization said on its website. Those items include hygiene kits, cooking utensils, and materials for temporary shelter.

The Jesus Covenant Church, the Evangelical Covenant Church’s sister denomination, is assessing how to best respond to the disaster, and CWR will work with them, said director Dave Husby. The denomination has four churches in the Philippines.

Covenant World Relief also will look to work with other partners as needs are assessed.
