Although Covenanter Mary Helwig lost her home and nearly everything she owned in Alaska’s devastating Sockeye Fire last June, she has set her sights on winning her first Iditarod this year. The 1,000-mile race from Anchorage to Nome tests the stamina of mushers and their dog teams. “I am looking forward to mushing ‘home’ to Unalakleet, one of the checkpoints, and greeting my friends from there to Nome.”
Cheer Helwig On. Follow her progress at iditarod.com.
The race begins March 5 and runs for nine to fifteen days or more.
I showed Mary Helwig’s grandmother, Marilyn Sandberg at Cov Village Turlock, this picture and article of her granddaughter this afternoon.
She was thrilled.
GO MARY.
