ANCHORAGE, AK (June 16, 2015) — At least one Covenanter is reported to have lost her home to a fire that started near Willow, a town about 80 miles north of Anchorage.

Mary Helwig lost her home to the fire, but she and her dogs were safe, said Eric Johnson, director of ministry and development for the Amundsen Educational Center.

The Sockeye Fire has consumed more than 6,500 acres since it started on Monday. As of last night it was 0 percent contained, according to state officials.

Meanwhile firefighters also were battling a blaze on the Kenai Peninsula, near Soldotna, where Alaska Christian College and the Amundsen Educational Center are located. That fire has burned at least six structures and forced the evacuation of the community of Sterling.
