PLANTATION, FL (April 13, 2015) — Carol Louise Bringerud, former missionary to Japan, died April 1, 2015, at Covenant Village of Florida. She was 91.
Carol was born June 14, 1923, to Edwin and Elsie Moberg Johnson in Worcester, Massachusetts, and grew up attending Bethlehem Covenant Church.
Following high school she attended Clark University where she earned her bachelor’s degree in history and received her teaching certification. Her first teaching job was in White River Junction, Vermont.
Following World War II she responded to General Douglas MacArthur’s plea for missionaries to go to Japan.
She spent two years studying to ready herself for the mission field at North Park Seminary. She traveled to Japan in 1951 and met Göte Bringerud, who was with the Swedish Covenant Mission. The two married on July 11, 1953.
After her marriage, Carol became a missionary with the Swedish Covenant Mission. She moved to Okayama-ken, where she and Göte were involved in evangelism and church planting. In 1964 they moved to Tokyo, where Göte taught at the Covenant Seminary and together they served as the high-school boys dorm parents at Christian Academy in Japan.
The family returned to Lexington in 1966 and settled in Lexington, Massachusetts, where Carol taught in the Newton Public Schools. In 1971 Göte was called to serve at the Mission Covenant Church in Orange, Massachusetts. Carol worked alongside Göte as the pastor’s wife and worked at the high school.
After Orange they served together at Covenant churches in Lafayette, Indiana, and Lockport, Illinois. The couple retired in 1989.
Carol is survived by her husband, Göte; four children, Lisa (Daniel) Westberg of Växjö, Sweden, and Nashotah, Wisconsin, Tina (Randy) Olson of Jamestown, New York, Kurt (Marina) of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, and Bruce (Anneli) of Söråker, Sweden; 11 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
