MINNETONKA, MN (October 22, 2014) — Retired Covenant missionary Joy (Moberg) Lundquist, 88, died Friday.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Excelsior (Minnesota) Covenant Church. Visitation will be at 10 a.m.
Joy was born November 23, 1925 in Winona, Minnesota. She earned a bachelor of arts degree at College of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington.
She married Don Lundquist in 1956. He survives.
The couple served in Congo from 1956 to 1975. They first served in Karawa and then Goyongo, where Don trained pastors.
From 1975 to 1984, the couple served the Fridley (Minnesota) Covenant Church, where Don was pastor. In 1988, they returned to Bumba in Congo for two years before retiring in 1990.
Joy worked part-time in retirement, most notably for HCJB, a Christian radio station. She also taught English as a second language to Somali immigrants, delivered Meals on Wheels, and did other volunteer work.
In addition to her husband, Joy is survived by four children, John Lundquist, Marnie (Mark) Gaasedelen, Beth (Mike) Milovich, and Paul (Ako) Lundquist; and four grandchildren.
Memorials preferred to Covenant World Missions for Congo or Excelsior Covenant Church.
Pastor Don and Joy were my Pastor and Pastor’s wife during my teens and early twenties. Their stories of Zaire helped to cultivate my love for mission work and missionaries. Their kids were just a little bit older than me, and I got to know them well during their time at Fridley Covenant. Singing with Joy in the choir brings back so many memories. I’m glad to still be in touch a little bit with the family. Every time they come to mind it puts a smile on my face. I grieve with the family, but not like those who have no hope. Joy is with our Lord and I look forward to joining them someday.
