Umanos, a Covenanter, was working at a hospital run by the nonprofit CURE International when a security guard not employed by the facility suddenly opened fire on him and others. An American father and son also were murdered by the gunman who turned the weapon on himself but survived.

Umanos’s widow, Jan Schuitema, said, “Jerry always wanted to serve underserved populations. Afghanistan was just one of them. He always had a desire to be the hands and feet of Christ.” The family held a private memorial service on Saturday.
