Space Still Available for WellSpring Benefit

CHICAGO, IL (October 23, 2012) – The WellSpring Center for Hope in Chicago will hold its annual awards luncheon from noon to 3 p.m. October 27 at the Oak Lawn Hilton in Oak Lawn, Illinois. Cost is $50 per person. There will be a raffle and silent auction at the event, which honors partners and raises awareness of domestic violence. Wellspring, an inner-city ministry sponsored by the Evangelical Covenant Church’s Ministries of Benevolence, provides crisis intervention, individual and family counseling, domestic violence education, service planning, support groups, referral for services, legal advocacy, non-legal advocacy, and community outreach.

Johnsons to Attend Groundbreaking for NPU Science Center

CHICAGO, IL (October 23, 2012) – North Park University will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the Nancy and G. Timothy Johnson Center for Science and Community Life on Friday.

The Johnsons will participate in the ceremony. Dr. G. Timothy Johnson is known for his work as chief medical editor for ABC News from 1984 to 2010. He graduated from North Park College in 1956 and earned a seminary degree at North Park Theological Seminary in 1963. He is an ordained Evangelical Covenant Church minister.

Nancy Johnson was trained as a nurse at the Swedish Covenant Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago, including study in the sciences at North Park University.

When completed, the new building will house science laboratories, classrooms, and offices, plus a variety of student services, including University Ministries, international study, career development, and residence life.

The university will provide a live webcast starting at 5 p.m. CDT.

Unique Seminar Presented Information on Retirement Issues

BROOKLYN PARK, MN (October 23, 2012) – Assisting aging parents and financial planning for retirement were the topics of the day-long seminar “Encore” that brought together representatives from Covenant Village of Golden Valley, Covenant Trust Company, and health professionals to share information with retirees and people intending to retire in the next 15 years.

Redeemer Covenant Church hosted the event, which was the first of its kind in the Covenant. During the morning, professionals gave an overview of a variety of topics and then participants had the opportunity to attend four breakout sessions in the afternoon.

Discussions included downsizing and de-cluttering, the pros and cons of staying in your own home versus moving into a retirement community, and how to secure finances for retirement.

North Park Graduates Honored for Academic, Professional Work

CHICAGO, IL (October 23, 2012) – Three alumni of North Park University were honored during Homecoming ceremonies for their work following graduation, and four were inducted into the Vikings Hall of Fame for their athletic accomplishments while attending the school.

Alicia (VerHage) Petersen, who graduated in 2002, was given the Distinguished Young Alumni Award. She is a trainer and curriculum developer for Management Systems International in Washington, D.C.

Joyce Nelson, a 1972 graduate, was presented the Distinguished University Alumni Award. She retired after 28 years with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, including seven years as president and chief executive officer.

Robert G. Houdek, a 1957 graduate of North Park Academy, was honored with the Distinguished Academy Alumni Award. He is a retired U.S. State Department foreign service officer, whose service included National Intelligence Officer for Africa, and advisor to the Chief of Staff of the Agency for International Development on the President’s Greater Horn of Africa Initiative during the Clinton Administration.

The awards were presented during the annual Reunion and Awards Breakfast on October 13.

Four athletes were honored during the Vikings Hall of Fame induction ceremony October 12:

  • John Douglass, who graduated with an associate’s degree in 1964, played football, basketball, and track and field.
  • Nels “Art” Edstrom, a 1953 graduate, distinguished himself on the basketball court and baseball field.
  • Laura Mount, who graduated in 2007, played basketball.
  • Austin Person, a 2007 graduate, was considered among the top NCAA Division III goalkeeper when he played for the soccer team.
