News Briefs: Covenanters Making Headlines

MADISON, NC (July 15, 2010) – Kallam Grove Church recently collected and boxed more than 1,100 pairs of shoes to be distributed around the world.

The congregation will donate the shoes to Soles4Souls, a nonprofit that distributes shoes to impoverished people around the world. Members of the church inspected and prepared all of the shoes for shipping, says member Penny Barnham.

The church set up collection boxes in restaurants, fire stations, and other churches. Many of the shoes were new and purchased with financial donations. “Shoe stores were eager to help and gave great discounts,” Barnham says.

Soles4Souls, a Nashville-based charity has distributed more than 10 million pairs of new and gently worn shoes to 125 countries, since 2004.

Covenant Retirement Community Hosts Local Church Plant

WESTMINISTER, CO (July 15, 2010) – The average age at the Covenant Village of Colorado retirement community dipped significantly when the young Hispanic church Iglesia Vida Nueva accepted the community’s invitation to conduct worship and baptism services on its campus.

About 60 members of the congregation, which is not an Evangelical Covenant Church, met for worship in the fellowship hall. Four new members were baptized in the campus pool following the service. Afterward, attendees shared a cookout and played games in the village courtyard.
